The Inwood Estate, where Stalbridge Quarries is based, has provided natural building and landscaping materials for its houses, gardens, barns, sheds, walls and local communities over the last several hundred years. These natural building materials included natural stone, timber, and thatch.
One fine example is the Stalbridge Park wall in Dorset. This is a dry stone wall that was built in 1800 by Napoleonic prisoners of war, and is just under 5 miles long and averages about 7 feet high. It is a functional work of art, and is one of the finest examples of drystone walling in the country after two hundred years of use. What other fencing material beats that? This is landscaping on a vast scale.
Today there is a great desire to build in the vernacular, not only to compliment the surroundings, but also to utilise the extraordinary building qualities of natural stone and timber. The natural building and landscaping materials, if chosen carefully to suit the particular purpose, can provide strength, durability, weather resistance, insulation and above all great beauty. This potentially adds great value to buildings, gardens and landscaping projects.
The Inwood Estate today provides natural building products of stone and timber. These locally-produced materials not only add value and beauty to the building and its surrounding landscape, but also provide more sustainable material than the often highly processed alternatives. Stone is the most available product in the world, and as Forest Marble is so hard and durable, this makes its use in any construction or landscaping project highly sustainable. For any green construction project, local stone is one of the most sustainable and beautiful building materials available.
